How many churches do you pass on the way to First Lutheran?

Welcome to the inaugural post of the FLC Transition Team Blog! The reason we have invited you here is to gain deeper insight into our shared and individual identity as a community of the faithful (members and non-members, alike).  This forum will offer an opportunity to delve more deeply into some of the themes that emerged from the initial survey. Our ultimate goal is to help our call committee find a pastor who not only "gets" us, but will help us grow.

This is a space for discussion. You are encouraged to return often to respond and further the dialogue as it develops. If you see an idea that you really like, show your support for the poster and their idea by replying directly to that post.

A few suggestions:
  • Be yourself
  • Reply thoughtfully...
  • Humor, sarcasm, and cynicism might sound better in your head than on the page
  • Preview/edit your response before you click the submit button
  • Refrain from chat speak and inappropriate language (LOL, OMG, lutefisk, etc.)
  • If it makes you more comfortable, you are encouraged to reply anonymously...
...Your thoughts and participation are valuable!

Questions to get us started:
  1. How many churches do you pass on your way to First Lutheran?
  2. How many Lutheran churches do you pass?
  3. Why do you keep driving?
You may need to click on the small "comment" link below, in order to see and post comments.

  2. We live so close that we don't actually pass any churches on our route to church! Coming to FLC is a choice we made carefully, though. When we moved to KC, we shopped around for churches based on what we saw on the ELCA website and individual church websites. We actually used our smartphones to look up churches as we drove by, to see what they were all about. First Lutheran was one of three whose services we actually attended after narrowing down our choices online, and we liked the "vibe" here, especially the traditional service and the welcoming atmosphere (Dudley zeroed right in and introduced himself, but nobody bothered us at home later with mugs, which we actually found a little obtrusive...). We keep coming because we find FLC a place where it is easy to be part of a community. No one gives you the stink-eye if you don't come for a few weeks, and that makes it easier to work regular church attendance into our busy lifestyles - we're always welcome back!

    1. Depending on our chosen route we either pass two churches or four churches. We always pass by a Lutheran church. From our very first visit we have always felt at home at First so there is no need to stop at any of the other churches we pass even the Lutheran one.

    2. None----but we visited several churches before joining FLC as it was the most welcoming.

  3. I pass many, many churches on my way to First and a couple of those are LCMS. There is an ELCA congregation that is much closer to me than First. I often think about going there. But I expect to retire in a few years and will stick with First until then, when I move out of the area.
